The Revanth government has taken a significant step for the welfare of handloom workers in the state. As part of the “Loan Waivers to Handloom Weavers Scheme”, the government has issued official orders to release an additional ₹16.27 crore over the previously allocated budget. Earlier, the government had allocated ₹33 crore for waiving the old loans of handloom workers. However, with the increase in the number of beneficiaries, the total outstanding loans have reached ₹48.30 crore, according to the Commissioner of Handloom and Textiles Department. Considering the increased loan amount and administrative costs for implementing the scheme, additional funds were requested from the government.
In several districts, handloom cooperative societies led protests demanding the release of the loan waiver funds. Responding positively, the government has released the required funds from the 2025-26 budget estimates through a Government Order (GO) issued by Shailaja Ramayyar, Principal Secretary of Industries, Commerce, and Textiles. With the newly approved ₹16.27 crore, handloom workers will receive loan relief, with 2% of the funds allocated for administrative expenses. This decision has brought joy to thousands of handloom families, reducing their debt burden and offering renewed opportunities to access new loans from banks, fostering hope and financial stability among the beneficiaries.
