The President of India, Droupadi Murmu, has approved the Supreme Court Collegium’s recommendation to appoint five new judges to the Supreme Court. The Ministry of Law and Justice has issued separate notifications confirming the appointments. With this, the total strength of the Supreme Court will increase to 37 judges.
The newly appointed judges include Chief Justices from various High Courts and senior advocate V. Mohana, who will become the second woman advocate elevated directly to the Supreme Court. Chief Justice Suryakant will administer the oath to the new judges. The appointments also ensure representation from states like Jharkhand and Tamil Nadu, while no newly appointed judge is expected to become Chief Justice of India due to age constraints.
