The women of Bokkasampalem village in Sri Kalahasti mandal have scripted an inspiring success story through unity, determination, and self-employment. Once dependent on daily wage labour in neighbouring villages, nearly 230 women from the village are now financially independent. By forming 17 self-help groups and availing loans, they created sustainable livelihoods in dairy farming, tailoring, Kalamkari art, soap making, and other small-scale businesses. Along with milk sales, the women are also manufacturing dairy products and marketing them in nearby villages and in Sri Kalahasti town, generating steady profits for their families. Their active role in village development and governance impressed officials, leading to the village being recognised at the national level with an award and ₹1 crore in development funds.
Embracing modern technology further strengthened the village’s transformation. Inspired by online learning, three women learned liquid detergent-making techniques through YouTube tutorials and professional training in Hyderabad. They launched a small startup producing washing machine liquid detergent and now supply it to homes, hotels, and hospitals in surrounding areas, earning up to ₹15,000 per month. Financial independence has also brought major social change, with families now prioritising education for girls instead of early marriages. A model school has been established in the village, attracting students from nearby areas. The gram panchayat has decided to utilise the ₹1 crore award for women empowerment programs, skill development courses, and additional employment opportunities, turning Bokkasampalem into a model for rural transformation and women-led progress.
