The District Consumer Commission has imposed a hefty ₹7 lakh fine on a shopkeeper at Annavaram Devasthanam for allegedly selling a water bottle above its maximum retail price. A complaint was filed by D. Venkateswara Rao of Pithapuram, alleging that a water bottle with an MRP of ₹18 was sold to him for ₹25. After hearing the complaint, the commission ruled against the shopkeeper and imposed the penalty.
According to the commission’s order, the shopkeeper must also pay ₹10,000 as compensation to the complainant and ₹5,000 towards litigation expenses. In addition, ₹7 lakh has been ordered to be deposited into the Consumer Welfare Fund. The entire amount has to be paid within 45 days, as per the commission’s directions.
