Comedian Kunal Kamra has shared a personal message written by former Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student Umar Khalid to his family and friends, drawing attention to his nearly six years in jail. In the message, Khalid questioned whether he had received a fair trial and rejected being labelled a terrorist. He also described his daily routine in prison and questioned why BJP leader Kapil Mishra had not faced similar action over remarks made before the February 2020 Northeast Delhi riots.
Khalid was arrested in September 2020 under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) in connection with an alleged larger conspiracy behind the riots. He has denied the allegations and argued that a speech he delivered in Maharashtra, away from the site of the violence, was used to build the case against him. The Delhi High Court rejected his latest bail plea on September 30, 2026. Kamra’s post has renewed public attention on Khalid’s prolonged detention, his demand for a fair trial and broader questions about due process and individual rights.
