Noida police have reportedly registered a First Information Report (FIR) against two users of X, formerly Twitter, and several unidentified individuals for allegedly spreading false information about YouTuber Dhruv Rathee’s arrest. The claims circulated widely on social media on October 16. According to media reports, the case was registered at Sector 39 police station under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Information Technology Act.
The misleading posts allegedly claimed that Rathee had been arrested for making videos that insulted Hindu deities and promoted hatred. Gautam Buddh Nagar Police Commissionerate responded through an official statement on X, clarifying that Noida police had not arrested him and that the claims were false. Police reportedly stated that the misinformation could create public anxiety and disturb law and order, warning of legal action against those who deliberately spread fake news. The report also refers to an earlier incident on October 11, when Gurugram police reportedly detained Rathee for around 18 hours ahead of a planned protest in Delhi calling for Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation. Authorities have urged people not to confuse that earlier incident with the false claims about an arrest in Noida.
