Australian Member of Parliament Helen Haines has been seriously injured in what authorities and political leaders have described as a deliberate car attack. The incident took place outside her office in Wangaratta, around 200 kilometres from Melbourne. Victoria's acting police chief, Ashley Mason, confirmed that the 65-year-old MP sustained serious injuries. Police have taken a 43-year-old driver into custody in connection with the incident. Officers also reported finding a knife inside the vehicle. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese condemned the incident, describing it as an attack rather than an accident.
Prime Minister Albanese said the incident was not accidental and appeared to be a deliberate act. He also expressed his wishes for Haines's speedy recovery. The motive behind the alleged attack remains unclear, and further investigation is expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident. The case comes amid growing concerns over threats against politicians in Australia. Authorities have reportedly established special teams to identify and apprehend groups involved in threatening elected representatives, highlighting increasing concerns about the safety of public officials.
