The Supreme Court heard the petition filed by the Trinamool Congress (TMC) regarding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. During the hearing, TMC argued that deletions made under the SIR process had significantly affected election results in several constituencies. The party claimed it lost many seats by narrow margins and alleged that thousands of appeals seeking restoration of deleted votes were still pending when elections were conducted.
TMC further stated that in one constituency, its candidate lost by just 862 votes while more than 5,000 names were allegedly removed from the voter list. The party argued that while the overall vote difference between TMC and BJP in the state was around 32 lakh votes, more than 35 lakh appeals against voter deletions were pending. Responding to the arguments, the Supreme Court observed that voters or political parties in constituencies affected by such deletions could file fresh applications. A bench headed by Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi said such cases would be examined appropriately.
