The Telangana government has renewed its focus on the Pranahita-Chevella project, which had remained stalled for several years. Chief Minister Revanth Reddy is actively working to revive the project and accelerate its progress. The government is now concentrating on plans to divert water from Tummidihetti to Sundilla barrage. During his recent Delhi visit, the Chief Minister reportedly discussed the issue with central leaders as part of efforts to move the project forward.
Earlier, disputes between Telangana and Maharashtra over the height of the Tummidihetti barrage had delayed the project. The Telangana government is now trying to convince Maharashtra to agree to the construction at a height of 150 meters. Irrigation Minister Uttam Kumar Reddy has already written to the Maharashtra Chief Minister seeking approval. Once consent is received, the government plans to finalize the DPR and seek clearances from the Central Water Commission. The state also aims to divert Pranahita waters to Sundilla and later lift them to Sreepada Yellampalli.
To assess the ground situation, Ministers Jupally Krishna Rao and Vivek Venkataswamy will visit Tummidihetti today. Officials are expected to brief them on water availability and construction feasibility. Following the visit, the government is likely to take key decisions regarding the project. Reports suggest that Chief Minister Revanth Reddy may soon hold discussions with the Maharashtra government to speed up the implementation process.
