Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently visited five countries, during which he presented gifts reflecting India’s culture, lifestyle, and heritage to world leaders. Among the notable gifts was Loktak Lotus Tea, a special tea powder produced in Manipur, which was presented to Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson.
Loktak Lake in Manipur, known for its natural beauty and biodiversity, is the source of this unique tea made from lotus leaves collected sustainably from the wetlands. The initiative, started by women from Thanga village, aims to promote eco-friendly livelihood and highlight North East India’s indigenous products globally. Along with the tea, Modi also gifted a handcrafted Santiniketan leather bag and Rabindranath Tagore’s works. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni received a silk stole made in Manipur, while President Sergio Mattarella was gifted curated music CDs of Pandit Bhimsen Joshi and M.S. Subbulakshmi placed in a marble-crafted box. Black rice from Manipur was also among the gifts, showcasing India’s rich regional diversity.
