Communities and youth groups in Indonesia are turning plastic waste into a creative farming solution to tackle frequent floods and heavy rainfall. Instead of throwing away used plastic water and soft drink bottles, many people are collecting them and converting them into floating vegetable beds.
The bottles are tied together with bamboo structures to create floating platforms on water bodies. Soil and lightweight growing materials are then placed on top to cultivate vegetables. During floods, these floating beds rise along with the water level, preventing crops and seeds from getting damaged underwater. The vegetables grown on these beds are used for local needs and are also sold in markets. The innovative idea has gone viral online, with many praising the creativity and environmental awareness of Indonesian youth.
