The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has introduced several new reforms under the PM-WANI (Prime Minister’s Wi-Fi Access Network Interface) framework to improve public internet access across India. The latest changes include QR code-based authentication for laptops and secondary devices, flexible short-duration Wi-Fi plans of 15, 30, and 60 minutes, and standardized hotspot names for easier identification and better user experience.
The Ministry of Communications stated that these reforms are aimed at providing affordable and accessible digital connectivity to citizens in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision. Officials have directed all PM-WANI stakeholders to implement the updated guidelines within eight weeks, making the new features operational across the country by July 2026. The government said the initiative will benefit students, travellers, professionals, commuters, and small businesses by improving access to reliable public Wi-Fi services.
