COVID-19 and H1N1 influenza are different viruses, but both can infect the same person at the same time. Common symptoms include fever, cough, sore throat, runny or blocked nose, headache, body aches and severe tiredness. In some cases, breathing difficulty, pneumonia or low oxygen levels may develop. Older adults, young children, pregnant women and people with diabetes, heart disease, asthma, kidney problems, obesity or weakened immunity may have a higher risk of complications.
Since COVID-19 and flu symptoms can look very similar, it may not be possible to identify the infection based only on symptoms. Doctors may recommend appropriate laboratory tests, including PCR-based testing, when required. If both infections are confirmed, treatment depends on the patient’s condition and should be taken only under medical supervision. Antibiotics should not be used without medical advice, as they do not treat viral infections unless a bacterial infection is also present.
People should seek immediate medical attention if they experience severe breathing difficulty, persistent chest pain or pressure, bluish or grey lips or face, confusion, loss of consciousness or extreme weakness. Preventive measures include recommended vaccination, regular hand hygiene, wearing a suitable mask in crowded or poorly ventilated places and keeping distance from others when sick. Avoid self-medication and consult a healthcare professional when symptoms appear.
