

A catastrophic flash flood in Nepal’s Himalayan border region has caused widespread destruction, claiming at least 157 lives and leaving hundreds of people missing. The Bhotekoshi River and adjoining areas were inundated after a massive surge of water and debris swept downstream, damaging homes, roads, bridges and other infrastructure. Initial reports linked the disaster to an earthquake recorded in the region. However, the US Geological Survey later revised its assessment, concluding that the seismic signal was generated by a glacial collapse and debris flow, rather than a conventional earthquake.
The USGS initially classified the event as a magnitude 4.4 earthquake, but further analysis of seismic waves and satellite imagery indicated that the event was associated with the collapse of glacial material and the subsequent movement of ice, rocks and debris. Nepalese authorities have also reported that an ice avalanche blocked the Lhende River, creating a temporary lake before the accumulated water and debris surged downstream into the Bhotekoshi system. The disaster has affected both Nepal and Tibet, with rescue operations continuing amid severe damage and difficult terrain. Current reports indicate that the number of missing people could rise as authorities continue search and rescue efforts.
