‘Free Shop’ Initiative Bridges the Gap Between Donors and the Needy in Visakhapatnam!

With a vision to connect unused resources to those in need, a couple from Visakhapatnam — Vijay and Neeraja — launched a unique initiative titled ‘Free Shop’ in September last year. The concept encourages people to donate unused clothes and household items, which are then made freely available to underprivileged families. After sharing the initiative on social media, the response from donors has been overwhelming. With support from friends and volunteers, the couple has so far distributed clothes and essential items to more than 3,000 beneficiaries. Operating from a small room at their residence near Port Stadium in Akkayyapalem, the shop opens every Sunday at 9 a.m., drawing visitors from surrounding localities including Narasimhanagar, Ganesh Nagar, Kancherapalem, and Muralinagar.

The initiative runs entirely on voluntary contributions. Donors either deliver items directly or the team collects them when required, with parcels also arriving from nearby areas. Clothes and materials are carefully sorted for men, women, and children, washed, ironed, and neatly arranged before distribution. Apart from garments, the Free Shop has provided electrical appliances, kitchen utensils, fans, footwear, and spectacles. Over 15 volunteers assist the couple in managing operations, dedicating one full day each week to sorting and preparation. The organizers have now decided to extend their outreach by delivering essentials directly to underserved communities on the second Saturday of every month. This month, they aim to support 1,000 people in Malkapuram, further expanding their community service efforts.
