India’s first ropeway-based public transport system is nearing completion in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. The new transport facility is being developed to make travel easier for pilgrims and tourists visiting the holy city. The ropeway connects Varanasi Cantonment Railway Station with Godowlia, covering a distance of approximately 3.75 kilometres. Around 95 per cent of the construction work has been completed, and trial runs are currently underway. Authorities are making arrangements to launch the service in December this year.
Once operational, the ropeway is expected to reduce the travel time between the two locations from around 45 minutes to just 15 minutes. The facility is likely to provide a convenient travel option for devotees visiting the Kashi Vishwanath Temple, while also helping ease road congestion in the city. The new system is expected to offer a faster and more convenient way to reach important destinations in Varanasi.
