Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has analysed the possible political challenges facing US President Donald Trump following the country's midterm election results. He observed that a stronger Democratic presence in Congress could make it harder for the Trump administration to push forward its key domestic agenda. Legislative proposals, budget decisions and important government appointments may face stronger opposition, requiring greater political negotiation and support from lawmakers.
Explaining the term ‘lame duck’, Tharoor said it refers to a political situation in which a leader's ability to implement decisions becomes limited because of a change in the balance of power. However, it does not mean that Trump has lost his presidency or that all his powers have been reduced. The US President continues to enjoy significant authority in foreign policy, even if domestic decisions encounter resistance in Congress. The extent of these challenges depends on the political composition of the House of Representatives and the Senate.
