The rapid spread of the Ebola virus across parts of Africa has triggered global concern, with several countries, including India, stepping up preventive measures to stop its spread. However, authorities in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where the outbreak originated, are facing criticism over delayed response and inadequate containment efforts. The first official Ebola case was reported in Bunia city on May 15, but international investigations revealed that the virus had likely been spreading silently for nearly two months before detection, raising fears of a much larger outbreak.
Reports indicate that medical infrastructure in the affected regions remains severely inadequate, with shortages of isolation facilities, PPE kits, sanitizers and testing equipment. Due to fuel shortages for generators, health officials are reportedly conducting only 20 to 40 tests per day. Financial constraints following major international funding cuts have further weakened Congo’s healthcare response. Officials also expressed concern after locals reportedly attacked a hospital and forcibly took away the bodies of Ebola victims for traditional funerals, increasing the risk of faster community transmission. More than 900 cases have been reported so far, with the mortality rate estimated at around 40 percent.
