Pranahita–Chevella Project to Get New Push.. Key Talks with Maharashtra

Telangana Irrigation Minister Uttam Kumar Reddy said the state government is taking key steps to revive the Pranahita–Chevella project and restore irrigation benefits for farmers. He said the primary objective is to secure Maharashtra’s consent for constructing a barrage across the Pranahita River at Thummidihatti at a level of 152 metres. If approved, around 80 TMC of water could potentially reach the Sundilla Barrage through gravity flow, reducing the need for extensive pumping.

Ahead of the inter-state discussions between Telangana and Maharashtra scheduled for September 1 under the Union Jal Shakti Ministry, the minister held a high-level preparatory meeting with irrigation officials and engineers. The meeting reviewed the technical and legal arguments to be presented, the benefits of the barrage, possible submergence in Maharashtra and the feasibility of gravity-based water transfer. Uttam Kumar Reddy described the start of formal discussions between the two states as a major step towards reviving the project.
