9/11: How Canada Opened Its Doors to Thousands of Stranded Passengers

September 11, 2001, remains one of the darkest days in modern history. After terrorists hijacked four passenger aircraft, the United States shut down its airspace, leaving hundreds of international flights unable to continue their journeys. Canada responded with Operation Yellow Ribbon, a large-scale aviation and security effort that diverted 238 international flights to airports across the country. Transport Canada records show that 224 diverted aircraft carrying more than 33,000 passengers were tracked under the operation.

One of the most remarkable chapters unfolded in Gander, Newfoundland and Labrador. Thirty-eight aircraft carrying more than 6,500 passengers and crew were diverted there. With fewer than 10,000 residents, the small town suddenly had thousands of unexpected visitors. Local people opened their homes and offered food, clothing and other necessities, while schools and community facilities were used to accommodate travellers. Passengers remained in Gander for several days before their journeys could resume. The town’s response became an enduring example of compassion and solidarity following the tragedy.
