Key discussions have begun between Telangana and Maharashtra over the proposed construction of a barrage at Tummidihatti. A delegation led by Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy met Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis at Sahyadri State Guest House in Mumbai. Telangana Irrigation Minister Uttam Kumar Reddy, government adviser Ramakrishna Rao, Chief Secretary Sanjay Jaju, senior officials and engineers attended the meeting. The Telangana delegation sought Maharashtra’s approval for constructing the barrage at a height of 152 metres. During the meeting, Uttam Kumar Reddy presented a detailed PowerPoint presentation explaining the project’s significance and the need for the proposed height. He pointed out that although an earlier agreement envisaged a structure at 148 metres, that height would not allow Telangana to utilise the required quantity of water.
The Telangana delegation emphasised the importance of the Pranahita river waters to the erstwhile Adilabad district and the state as a whole, urging Maharashtra to extend its cooperation. Officials explained that a barrage at 152 metres would reportedly submerge around 2,300 acres of land in Maharashtra. If the height were reduced to 150 metres, the submerged area would be limited to less than 1,000 acres, they said. The delegation also presented technical details, including studies by WAPCOS and CWPRS, the pre-feasibility report and other relevant assessments. Revanth Reddy’s team urged Fadnavis to agree to the proposed 152-metre structure. The two Chief Ministers also held a separate meeting before the formal discussions.
