A colourful bag from luxury fashion house Fendi has sparked a debate over its resemblance to traditional Indian craft. Widely referred to as the “Navratri bag” on social media, the accessory has been reported to carry a price tag of around ₹8.3 lakh. Many users have pointed to its vibrant embroidery, mirror work and bead detailing, saying the design resembles traditional colourful bags commonly seen in Gujarat during the Navratri season. Critics have also questioned the lack of explicit cultural context about India in the product description.
Industrialist Harsh Goenka and Biocon Executive Chairperson Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw have also weighed in on the controversy. Goenka questioned the high price of the Fendi bag in comparison with similar-looking traditional bags available in Gujarat and raised concerns about recognition for Indian artisans. Mazumdar-Shaw said traditional Indian craftsmanship should receive due recognition when it is presented as a luxury product. At the same time, reports have noted that the bag was handcrafted in Mumbai at the Chanakya workshop, highlighting the involvement of Indian craft specialists in its production.
