Domestic brands are making fresh moves in India’s smartphone market, with companies such as Mivi, Fire-Boltt and Ai+ already launching devices aimed at budget-conscious buyers. Now, Karbonn, a brand that once had a strong presence in the mobile phone market, is preparing to make a comeback. According to Pradeep Jain, CEO of Karbonn’s parent company, the Jaina Group, the brand plans to introduce smartphones targeting Gen Z consumers and content creators. The announcement comes at a time when smartphone prices are rising, making affordable alternatives increasingly important for buyers.
Karbonn has yet to announce a launch date for its upcoming smartphone. However, a microsite titled ‘Karbonn Rebel 5G’ has appeared on Amazon, fuelling speculation about a possible launch. The company introduced its first Android smartphone, the Karbonn A1, in 2011 but later struggled to compete with Chinese smartphone brands and withdrew from the market. The Indian government is now offering incentives to encourage domestic mobile manufacturing. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has said that India could see more locally designed and manufactured phones by 2028. Meanwhile, Nothing’s move to make its sub-brand CMF a fully Indian company also highlights the growing focus on domestic smartphone manufacturing.
