Jio Platforms Limited (JPL), the telecommunications and digital services subsidiary of Reliance Industries, made a strong debut on the stock market on Wednesday after successfully completing its initial public offering (IPO) the previous week. Against the IPO price of ₹1,119 per share, the stock opened on the BSE at ₹1,358, registering a premium of 21.36%. It subsequently climbed to an intraday high of ₹1,423.80, gaining 27.33% over the issue price, before closing its first trading session at ₹1,417.50, up 26.67%. Following the listing, Jio Platforms’ market capitalisation rose to approximately ₹13.05 lakh crore, making it India’s second-most valuable listed company and placing it ahead of telecom rival Bharti Airtel.
The listing also reshaped the rankings of India’s most valuable companies. Reliance Industries retained the top position with a market capitalisation of approximately ₹15.67 lakh crore, while Airtel slipped to third place with around ₹12.16 lakh crore. HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank ranked fourth and fifth, respectively, while Tata Consultancy Services moved to sixth place. Based on the IPO valuation, Jio Platforms’ market capitalisation was estimated at around ₹10.3 lakh crore. Its strong first-day performance increased that value substantially, generating an estimated ₹2.75 lakh crore in additional market value for IPO investors. Jio Platforms also emerged as the world’s seventh-most valuable telecom company and the second-most valuable telecom operator in Asia after China Mobile.
Jio Platforms’ listing also boosted the combined market value of the Reliance group, including Reliance Industries, Jio Platforms and Jio Financial Services, to approximately ₹30 lakh crore, placing it ahead of the Tata group in the corporate group valuation rankings cited in the report. The Tata group ranked second, followed by the Adani group. To mark the listing, Reliance Industries Chairman Mukesh Ambani reportedly hosted a special lunch for employees at the Reliance Corporate Park in Mumbai. The company also reportedly paid October salaries early and disbursed 75% of employees’ annual cash bonuses or performance-linked incentives for the financial year ahead of Diwali. Ambani said Jio’s journey in the stock market was only beginning and expressed confidence that it would deliver value to shareholders over the coming decades, following Reliance Industries’ long-term record.
