E-commerce giant Amazon has once again delivered a shock to its employees. According to a Reuters report, the company on Tuesday implemented job cuts in its robotics division. The move has impacted approximately 100 white-collar positions within the robotics unit. Employees involved in robot design, automation technologies and the development of transportation systems used in warehouses were reportedly affected by the layoffs.
Last year, Amazon undertook large-scale workforce reductions as well. After announcing plans to eliminate a total of 30,000 positions, the company laid off 14,000 employees in October. Subsequently, in January this year, another 16,000 employees were let go. The company had earlier indicated that layoffs could continue in the future.
In this context, the latest decision to cut another 100 jobs has drawn attention. Commenting on the layoffs previously, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy stated that the job reductions were not driven by financial constraints or artificial intelligence (AI). He explained that as part of the company’s operational structure, new employees are hired each year, leading to workforce expansion and that periodic layoffs become necessary to maintain balance.
