EC Announces By-Election Schedule for Six Seats in Four Regions

The Election Commission on Monday, September 7, announced the schedule for by-elections to one Lok Sabha seat in Assam and five Assembly constituencies spread across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and West Bengal. Polling for all six seats will be held on October 6, while counting of votes and declaration of results will take place on October 9. The by-elections have been necessitated by vacancies created due to resignations and other reasons. The seats going to polls include the Nagaon Lok Sabha constituency in Assam, Nandigram and Rejigram in West Bengal, Thattanchavady in Puducherry, and Madurantakam and Dharapuram in Tamil Nadu.

However, the EC has not announced by-elections for six other Tamil Nadu constituencies, including Tiruchirappalli East, where Chief Minister Vijay reportedly resigned, along with Viralimalai, Perundurai, Ambasamudram and Karur. The source information indicates that petitions challenging the previous election results in these constituencies are pending before the Madras High Court. The Election Commission had earlier informed the court that it would not conduct by-elections in these seats until the petitions were disposed of and judgments were delivered. Accordingly, these constituencies have been excluded from the latest by-election schedule.
