Meta is tightening the rules for its popular messaging platform, WhatsApp, by restricting artificial intelligence (AI) companies from offering chatbot services through the WhatsApp Business API. Starting January 15, 2026, firms using AI chatbots or large language models (LLMs) will be blocked from providing chatbot access or using WhatsApp’s business data to train their models. However, businesses that use AI tools for customer service or workflow automation will not be affected by this change. According to Meta, the move ensures that WhatsApp remains a tool for customer interaction — not a platform for distributing AI bots.
Meta clarified that AI developers and providers are now strictly prohibited from using WhatsApp Business to “deliver, sell, or promote” AI or machine learning products. The company also retains full authority to suspend or terminate accounts that violate these terms.Firms like OpenAI and Perplexity, which currently allow users to chat with their AI bots via WhatsApp, will likely lose this integration once the rule takes effect. The policy also prevents these companies from using WhatsApp data to train or improve their models — though they may still use the API to fine-tune private, internal models.
Reports suggest that Meta introduced this restriction because the surge in AI chatbot traffic was putting extra load on its servers, and it may also serve as a way to promote Meta’s own AI assistant, Meta AI, across WhatsApp and its other products.
