OpenAI’s first mystery artificial intelligence device is reportedly an AI-powered audio headset. According to reports, the San Francisco–based company is close to finalising its vendor, after which it will begin mass production. OpenAI has also reportedly set a target shipment volume of 40–50 million units in the first year, indicating strong confidence in the product. The report adds that the long-rumoured AI Pen will not be the company’s first hardware launch, though it may still be part of its future plans. The device is expected to be unveiled in the second half of this year.
An ITHome report, citing Taiwan’s Economic Daily News, claims the headset will be OpenAI’s debut device. Earlier this week, Chief Global Affairs Officer Chris Lehane also said the first AI hardware would be revealed later this year, though market availability is unlikely before 2027, as previously suggested by Jony Ive. Since OpenAI is still finalising manufacturing partners and locations, production could extend toward the end of the year.
However, there is some uncertainty around these claims. During an ongoing legal dispute involving OpenAI and Jony Ive’s io venture, Tang Tan, OpenAI’s Chief Hardware Officer, had stated in an official declaration that the company’s first device would not be a wearable or in-ear product. As a result, details about the device remain speculative and clarity is expected only after OpenAI’s official announcement later this year.
