OpenAI has officially entered the hardware segment with the launch of Codex Micro, its first branded device developed in collaboration with hardware design company Work Louder. Unlike earlier speculation surrounding an AI device with former Apple designer Jony Ive, the company has introduced a programmable mechanical macropad built specifically for its AI coding assistant, Codex. Designed for developers and productivity users, the limited-edition accessory is priced at $230 and arrives as Codex approaches nine million users worldwide.
The Codex Micro features six dedicated AI Agent Keys with colour-coded status indicators, a programmable joystick, a rotary dial and fully customizable mechanical keys for managing AI workflows. Users can assign shortcuts to specific AI agents, review pull requests, accept or reject code changes and interact with Codex using push-to-talk voice commands. The device supports both USB-C and Bluetooth connectivity, offers silent or clicky mechanical switches and includes 32 additional keycaps for customization, making it a dedicated productivity tool for AI-assisted software development.
