OpenAI has introduced a free AI image verification tool as part of its growing efforts to combat misinformation and the rapid rise of deepfake content online. The ChatGPT-maker also announced a partnership with Google to integrate the invisible “SynthID” watermark into visuals generated using OpenAI tools. The new verification system helps users determine whether an image was created using AI technologies such as ChatGPT, Codex, or the OpenAI API.
The tool works using two major signals — Google DeepMind’s SynthID watermark and the C2PA metadata standard, which helps identify AI-generated content. Users can upload PNG, JPG, or WEBP images to check for AI-generated traces. OpenAI stated that SynthID is designed to remain detectable even after screenshots, resizing, or image manipulation, making it more durable against tampering. While the tool currently supports OpenAI-generated visuals, the company plans to expand compatibility with other AI platforms in the future.
