The Central Government has officially introduced the ₹62,500 crore Mobile Phone Manufacturing Scheme (MPMS) to encourage large-scale mobile phone production in India. According to the guidelines released on Friday, mobile phone companies and electronic contract manufacturing firms that recorded a turnover of ₹10,000 crore in the 2025-26 financial year will be eligible to avail the benefits of the scheme.
Union Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the scheme could help Indian brands launch completely domestically designed mobile phones with their own intellectual property rights within the next 10–14 months. The government will conduct strict checks on Indian brands and will not extend benefits to companies that copy the designs of others. Applicant companies will have to prove that their mobile phone designs are protected by intellectual property rights.
