India made a strong start to the second Test against Sri Lanka, finishing the opening day at 300/5 in the first innings. Devdutt Padikkal continued his impressive form by scoring a brilliant 117, while Shubman Gill contributed 50, Ravindra Jadeja made 43 and Yashasvi Jaiswal scored 45. Dhruv Jurel and Saransh Jain remained unbeaten at 7 and 4, respectively, at stumps.
India lost KL Rahul for 18 early in the innings before Jaiswal was dismissed for 45. Gill and Padikkal then steadied the innings with a 120 run partnership for the third wicket. Padikkal went on to complete his second consecutive century against Sri Lanka, but was eventually bowled for 117. Jadeja also fell for 43 late in the day, while Rishabh Pant retired hurt after suffering a forearm injury.
Earlier, India won the toss and opted to bat first, with captain Shubman Gill expecting the Colombo pitch to initially favour batting before offering assistance to spinners later. India made one change to the playing XI, bringing in 33 year old Saransh Jain on Test debut in place of Kuldeep Yadav. Sri Lanka made two changes, handing a debut to Kamil Mishara and bringing in Pasindu Sooriyabandara.
For Sri Lanka, Asitha Fernando claimed three wickets, while Lahiru Kumara and Keshara Nuwantha took one wicket each. India will look to build a commanding first-innings total on the second day and strengthen their bid to complete a series clean sweep after winning the opening Test.
