TikTok has reached a settlement with the US Justice Department in a case concerning the privacy and safety of children. Under the agreement, the short-video platform will pay $400 million to the department in two instalments, bringing the lawsuit filed in 2024 to an end.
The US authorities had accused TikTok and its China-based parent company ByteDance of violating federal rules that require parental consent before collecting personal information from children under the age of 13. US officials said the settlement was an important step towards protecting children and ensuring that social media platforms safeguard minors’ personal information.
The case comes at a time when social media companies are facing increasing legal scrutiny over children’s safety and privacy. Meta, the parent company of Instagram, is also facing legal proceedings over alleged violations of the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act and various state laws.
