Meta has released a mandatory software update for its Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses, introducing stronger privacy protections. The update addresses concerns that some users were disabling the built-in LED privacy indicator, which alerts people nearby whenever the glasses are recording photos or videos. With the latest update, the camera will automatically stop functioning if the system detects that the LED privacy light has been tampered with or damaged, preventing unauthorized recording.
At the same time, reports indicate that Meta is developing next-generation AI-powered smart glasses with "super sensing" capabilities. These experimental glasses could continuously use cameras and microphones to understand the wearer's surroundings, helping with tasks such as object recognition, contextual assistance, and memory recall. However, reports suggest Meta is also evaluating whether the LED indicator should remain inactive during these features, raising fresh concerns about privacy, consent, and the future of AI-powered wearable technology.
