Meta is facing a major legal challenge in the United States over allegations concerning the impact of Facebook and Instagram on children. Several U.S. states had accused the company of designing its platforms in ways that could encourage children to become dependent on social media. The allegations also included claims that Meta misled users about the safety of its platforms and improperly collected data belonging to children.
According to California’s Attorney General, Meta has agreed to a proposed settlement worth $17 billion, equivalent to around Rs 1.48 lakh crore. The development comes amid growing scrutiny of social media platforms and their impact on young users. The settlement is linked to the allegations raised by the states and does not by itself establish that the allegations were proven.
