As pressure on the global job market continues, Amazon has reportedly laid off around 250 software development employees in its Devices unit, according to international media reports. The division is responsible for products such as Kindle e-readers and Echo smart devices. Similar to Meta and Oracle, Amazon reportedly informed affected employees about the layoffs through early-morning emails and text messages. The company confirmed that it had decided to eliminate certain roles based on business needs, describing the decision as a difficult one.
The layoffs reportedly came on the same day Amazon announced several new Alexa-powered products developed by its Devices unit. These included a redesigned Echo Show 16 smart display, an Alexa photo frame and an Echo bedside clock, among other products. A day before the job cuts, Amazon had also reportedly issued an internal memo highlighting the growing importance of artificial intelligence in software engineering. The memo urged employees to embrace the changes and learn new skills, warning that those who failed to adapt risked falling behind.
