Perplexity CEO Aravind Srinivas has sparked an online discussion after questioning Google’s control over the internet. Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Srinivas wrote, “The Internet is too important to be left in Google’s hands.”The comment followed a friendly poll he conducted between Perplexity’s Comet browser and Google Chrome, where Chrome narrowly led with 51% votes compared to Comet’s 49%. In a follow-up post, Srinivas admitted that Comet still has a long way to go, but added that this was a great start for their new AI-powered browser.
Since launching its AI answer engine in December 2022, Perplexity has emerged as a strong challenger to Google, gaining 22 million active users and handling nearly 780 million monthly search queries.Earlier this year, the company introduced Comet, a next-generation browser with an integrated AI assistant and agentic capabilities, designed to make browsing smarter and more interactive. Meanwhile, Google Chrome continues to dominate with a massive 63.83% market share (as of September 2025), according to Similarweb.
Adding to this debate, the US Department of Justice (DOJ) recently accused Google of maintaining an unlawful monopoly in the browser and search market — a statement that aligns with Srinivas’s latest remarks. The message is clear: as AI reshapes how we use the web, Perplexity wants to ensure that the future of the Internet isn’t ruled by a single company.
