Google is preparing to re-enter the smart glasses market after several years. The company has confirmed that it plans to launch its first AI-powered smart glasses next year. For this new project, Google is collaborating with Samsung and Gentle Monster, while Warby Parker is helping develop two different models.
One of the models will not include a screen and will instead rely on the Gemini AI assistant to deliver information through audio. The second model will feature a tiny in-lens display capable of showing navigation data, translations, and other personal information directly in front of the user’s eyes.
Google first experimented with smart glasses back in 2012. However, because AI tools and hardware technology were still limited at that time, the project did not move forward. With today’s rapid advancements in AI and hardware, Google is now building more practical and powerful glasses using the Android XR platform.
Meanwhile, competition in the AR/AI wearables market is growing rapidly, with Meta–Ray-Ban, Snap, Alibaba, and Apple already pushing their own smart glasses. To stay competitive, Google is accelerating its efforts in this space. Early prototypes developed by the company include monocular and binocular displays with AR overlays for apps like Google Maps and Google Meet. These devices connect wirelessly to smartphones, making them lightweight and suitable for everyday use, according to Google.
