Google has released a significant update for its Gemini for macOS app, introducing advanced AI-powered voice transcription and contextual assistance for Apple desktop and laptop users. First unveiled during Google I/O 2026, the new Gemini Spark capabilities allow users to dictate naturally into any application by simply long-pressing the Function (Fn) key. The AI automatically converts speech into text, corrects mistakes, removes filler words such as "um" and "ah," and refines the final output for a smoother writing experience. The intelligent dictation feature is enabled by default and works across supported applications.
The update also brings screen-aware intelligence to Gemini for macOS. By enabling Gemini Reasoning in Settings, users can allow the AI to understand on-screen context and generate more relevant responses. Gemini can extract information, summarise content, identify local files, images, and documents, and assist users more effectively based on what is displayed on the screen. Google says these enhancements are now rolling out globally, making Gemini a more capable AI assistant for productivity and everyday workflows on macOS.
