Google and Apple announced a multi-year collaboration on Monday, where Google’s Gemini AI models and cloud technology will power the next generation of Apple Foundation Models. This partnership aims to improve the Apple Intelligence suite, including a more advanced and personalised version of Siri, which has been in development for some time.
Apple selected Google’s AI after careful evaluation, citing Gemini as the “most capable foundation” for its next-generation models. These Gemini-based models will underpin upcoming AI features across iPhone, iPad and Mac, offering more contextual and personalised assistance through Siri than previous versions. The enhanced Siri is expected to roll out this year, while Apple Intelligence will continue to operate on Apple devices and Private Cloud Compute.
Reports suggest Apple is paying Google to develop a custom Gemini AI model to run on Apple’s private cloud infrastructure, enhancing Siri’s capabilities, including AI-powered web search. Apple’s choice of Google is likely influenced by their existing business ties. At WWDC 2024, Apple previewed iOS 18 and its new AI suite, but the highly anticipated Apple Intelligence-powered Siri with contextual awareness and natural language support has not yet launched. Apple plans an internal release in Spring 2026, targeting the iOS 26.4 update, though this may be delayed depending on development challenges.
