OpenAI’s ChatGPT service, which was available on WhatsApp, officially came to an end yesterday (Thursday). The AI chatbot is no longer accessible on the Meta-owned messaging platform. This decision follows WhatsApp’s move to restrict chatbots based on large language models (LLMs). The deadline for discontinuing the service had already been set in October last year. At the time, WhatsApp updated its policy, stating that increased strain on its servers was the primary reason for the restriction. However, industry experts have suggested that the move could also be aimed at promoting Meta’s own chatbot, Meta AI.
OpenAI confirmed this development on its support page, stating that ChatGPT would no longer be available on WhatsApp from yesterday. The company clarified that ChatGPT services will continue to be available on iOS, Android, and web platforms. It also advised users to link their accounts if they wish to retain their conversation history. The shutdown was independently verified by the Gadgets 360 team. Currently, when users attempt to send a message to ChatGPT on WhatsApp, they receive a notification stating that the service is no longer available and are prompted to download the app to continue using it. Meanwhile, other platforms such as the website and desktop applications continue to operate normally. Reports suggest that other AI services available on WhatsApp, including Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot, may also face similar restrictions.
This development appears to be a result of WhatsApp’s updated Business Application Programming Interface (API) policy. Under the revised policy, the use of AI chatbots and machine learning technologies has been restricted. Meta retains full authority to determine what qualifies as an AI chatbot and has stated that accounts found violating these policies may be suspended. OpenAI first launched the ChatGPT service on WhatsApp in December 2024 through a dedicated phone number. Over time, the company expanded the service by adding features such as voice input, image input, and AI-powered image generation. Ultimately, OpenAI decided to discontinue the service on the platform.
