Apple is reportedly preparing to introduce search ads in its native Maps app as early as next year. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the Cupertino-based tech giant aims to allow restaurants and other businesses to pay for better visibility within the Maps search results. This initiative marks Apple’s latest attempt to expand its advertising revenue beyond the App Store. The plan reportedly follows a similar model to the existing App Store Search Ads program, where app developers can pay to have their apps displayed in a promoted slot based on user searches. In Apple Maps, this could mean that certain businesses appear more prominently when users search for nearby locations like cafes, hotels, or service providers.
Industry sources say Apple is working on a “more refined interface” for Maps ads, which will reportedly offer a cleaner experience than rival platforms like Google Maps. Additionally, the company is expected to use artificial intelligence (AI)-powered tools to ensure that ads are relevant and useful to users. While Apple plans to label these results as “sponsored” to maintain transparency, some users may criticize the move since Apple has long positioned itself as a privacy-first company. However, the company’s growing focus on ads reflects its broader strategy to diversify income sources, taking cues from Google’s success in advertising on Maps.
