England Test captain Ben Stokes has landed in controversy after allegedly violating team rules following England’s 115-run victory over New Zealand in the first Test at Lord’s. Reports suggest that Stokes and fast bowler Gus Atkinson visited a nightclub in London during the early hours of June 8, despite team regulations restricting players from being out after midnight. The incident has prompted the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) to launch an official investigation.
The controversy intensified after reports emerged of an altercation involving a rugby academy player. During the incident, a member of the ECB security staff reportedly suffered an injury that required stitches. While sources claim that neither Stokes nor Atkinson was involved in any physical assault, the ECB is said to be concerned about the breach of discipline. The board is expected to review the matter before the second Test and may take appropriate action.
This is not the first time Stokes has been linked to a nightclub-related controversy. In 2017, he was involved in a widely publicized incident outside a nightclub in Bristol. Following previous concerns about discipline and alcohol consumption during overseas tours, England had reintroduced strict curfew rules. With the ECB investigation underway, speculation has grown over whether Stokes could face disciplinary action or even questions regarding his captaincy.
