WhatsApp Ends Support for Android 5.0 and 5.1 Devices

WhatsApp has stopped working on devices running Android 5.0 and 5.1 from September 8, 2026. According to WABetaInfo, the messaging platform now requires Android 6.0 or a newer version to continue using the service. WhatsApp’s official Help Center also confirms that only Android 6 and later versions are supported from September 8. Users on affected devices are being advised to upgrade their operating system if a compatible update is available or move to a newer smartphone.

The move was announced in advance, with WhatsApp informing affected users through in-app notifications. The company regularly reviews the operating systems it supports, particularly older platforms that may lack current security updates or the technical capabilities required for newer features. WhatsApp says discontinuing support for outdated systems allows it to focus on newer technologies and security improvements. Users who need to retain their chats should back up their conversation history before switching devices.
