Artificial intelligence is rapidly changing the cybersecurity landscape by identifying software vulnerabilities at an unprecedented pace, leaving organisations with less time to fix security flaws before attackers exploit them. According to a Reuters report published by The Indian Express, research from cybersecurity intelligence firm VulnCheck indicates that the number of digital vulnerabilities discovered has doubled year-on-year. Experts warn that AI-powered tools can examine large codebases continuously, uncovering weaknesses that may have remained undetected for years. Recent security incidents involving PHP, Node.js and other internet-facing platforms have added to concerns, with some website operators temporarily taking services offline while working to secure their systems.
Cybersecurity professionals remain divided over whether the growing number of AI-discovered vulnerabilities will inevitably lead to more successful attacks. While some experts warn that attackers can now potentially develop exploits within hours rather than weeks or months, others point out that not every vulnerability can be easily weaponised. Security specialists stress that organisations must accelerate software updates, strengthen vulnerability monitoring and improve their incident-response procedures. Cloudflare CEO Matthew Prince has warned that the industry could face a prolonged period of frequent security emergencies. Experts nevertheless believe that AI-driven vulnerability detection could ultimately improve internet security if organisations respond quickly and patch weaknesses before cybercriminals exploit them.
