India’s victory in the T20 World Cup 2026 is well known, but a sensational development has now emerged regarding the tournament. The International Cricket Council’s anti-corruption unit has initiated an investigation following suspicions of corruption in one of the matches. The tournament, jointly hosted by India and Sri Lanka from February 7 to March 8, saw India, led by Suryakumar Yadav, defeat New Zealand in the final to claim their second title. Meanwhile, New Zealand earned praise for its impressive performances in the group stage and subsequent rounds. However, a particular group-stage match involving New Zealand has now come under scrutiny. The match, which included Canada, reportedly witnessed several suspicious developments. In particular, the performance of Canada’s captain Dilpreet Bajwa has raised multiple concerns. In that match, Canada posted a total of 173 runs, with opener Yuvraj Samra scoring a remarkable century.
During the run chase, despite New Zealand losing two early wickets, Canada failed to capitalize on the opportunity. A key moment that drew attention was Bajwa’s decision to bowl during the powerplay, despite not being a regular bowler. He conceded a significant number of runs in that over, shifting the momentum in New Zealand’s favor and ended up giving away many runs in his two overs. His slow batting performance also raised doubts, as he managed only a modest score despite playing on a batting-friendly pitch. These developments were highlighted by a Canadian investigative program, which exposed alleged corruption issues within Canadian cricket. Further suspicion arose from the fact that Bajwa was appointed captain just weeks before the tournament, along with reports of pressure in team selection and alleged links between certain players and bookmakers. The investigation is currently ongoing and if corruption is proven, strict action may be taken against the Canadian cricket authorities, making this issue a major talking point in the cricketing world.
