Indonesian weightlifter Rizki Juniansyah delivered a historic performance on Monday (6 October) at the 2025 IWF World Weightlifting Championships in Førde, Norway, claiming gold and setting a new world record in the process.
The Paris 2024 Olympic champion in the 73kg division moved up to compete in the 79kg category and proved his dominance once again. Juniansyah lifted 204kg in the clean and jerk, surpassing the previous world record of 202kg, and combined it with a 157kg snatch for a total of 361kg to secure his first-ever world title.
The 21-year-old lifter displayed remarkable control and confidence throughout the competition, drawing loud cheers from the crowd as he celebrated his record-breaking lift. His success continues Indonesia’s strong tradition in weightlifting and cements his status as one of the sport’s brightest young stars.
The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea’s Ri Chong-song pushed Juniansyah to the limit, finishing just one kilogram behind with a total of 360kg to earn silver. Egypt’s Mohamed Younes produced a steady performance to take bronze with a total that rounded out a thrilling contest.
Ri, who was the 2024 world champion in the 81kg class, showed impressive consistency but couldn’t match Juniansyah’s explosive power in the clean and jerk.
The Indonesian camp celebrated passionately after the event, with national coach Dwi Aryono calling Juniansyah’s win “a moment of pride for the entire nation.” He added, “Breaking a world record on your way to a world title shows not just strength, but heart and determination.”
Competition in Førde will continue on Tuesday (7 October) with the men’s 88kg and women’s 69kg categories, as lifters from across the world chase glory at one of weightlifting’s most prestigious events.
