Mumbai Indians are undergoing significant changes ahead of the 2027 IPL season. Mahela Jayawardene, who served as the franchise’s head coach for several years, has parted ways with the team, with former support staff member Kieron Pollard set to take over the role. Meanwhile, uncertainty surrounds Hardik Pandya’s future as captain, with questions also being raised about his continuation with the franchise. Suryakumar Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah and young batter Tilak Varma are among the names being discussed as potential successors. However, reports suggest that the management is considering bringing back former captain Rohit Sharma for one season before grooming Tilak as a future leader.
The franchise reportedly believes that handing Tilak the captaincy immediately could place him under pressure, particularly after the team’s disappointing performance last season and the ongoing changes within the squad and coaching staff. Mumbai Indians have also announced the departure of bowling coaches Lasith Malinga and Paras Mhambrey, along with fielding coach James Pamment, as part of a major overhaul of the support staff. With Pollard taking over as head coach following Jayawardene’s exit, attention is now on the franchise’s next move regarding its captaincy and coaching structure ahead of the new season.
