Actor, director and choreographer Raghava Lawrence has launched a special initiative titled ‘Pattu Sarees’ to provide silk sarees to underprivileged women. The idea was inspired by a letter he received from an elderly woman some time ago. In her letter, she expressed her wish to wear a silk saree during festivals and special occasions but said that financial difficulties prevented her from buying one. Moved by her request, Lawrence announced that he would launch a programme to distribute silk sarees to women on the occasion of his birthday.
As part of the first phase, Lawrence plans to distribute sarees to 5,000 economically disadvantaged women from rural areas. The initiative was launched on Thursday at Royapuram in Chennai, where he personally handed over silk sarees to several women in the presence of his mother, Kanmani. The programme aims to help women fulfil their wish of wearing silk sarees during festivals and special celebrations.
