Declining reservoir levels due to the El Niño impact have increased pressure on drinking water supply across Telangana. At a time when the government is focusing on ensuring uninterrupted water distribution, Mission Bhagiratha is facing a significant staff shortage, from chief engineers to field-level personnel. Of the nine sanctioned chief engineer posts, only five are currently occupied. Similarly, just 33 officials are working against 78 executive engineer posts. The department also has 180 vacant assistant executive engineer posts and 15 deputy engineer vacancies that need to be filled.
Officials and employees have expressed concern over the additional workload being assigned to the existing staff instead of filling vacancies. Five chief engineers at the headquarters have been given additional charge of district circles, while executive engineers and 50 deputy executive engineers are also handling extra responsibilities. Staff shortages have reportedly affected laboratories and field operations as well. With water levels declining in the 34 reservoirs that serve as key sources for Mission Bhagiratha, the government has directed officials to make alternative arrangements and expedite emergency works. However, officials say adequate staffing is essential for effective monitoring, coordination and implementation. They are seeking the recruitment of personnel and the completion of pending promotions.
